When I was younger I always assumed that gardening was for the older generation who had lots of time on their hands but in recent years I have started to enjoy doing it myself, and I am just in my 30s. I would be a fraud if I told you that I always loved gardening because that simply isn’t the case but after a good friend of mine Travis Cadman began talking about doing it, I thought that I’d give it a go. I am now 2 years into my new green-fingered life and I absolutely love it. I would urge anyone with a garden to have a go and here are just some of the benefits that you can enjoy.
Cathartic
One of the greatest benefits which I enjoy when I am in the garden is that it is a wonderful stress reliever. I had no idea just how relaxing it can be to spend a few hours in the garden and it really does help you to relax. I think the thing about gardening is that you are outside breathing fresh air, you are entirely focussed on something that isn’t your ‘daily life’ and that gives you time to organize your thoughts and forget about any stresses or strains which you may feel.
Rewarding
One of my favorite things about gardening is seeing some work which you have done come to fruition. In some cases that many be more instant like a new path, wall or building but the highest satisfaction comes from plants and flowers, something which you have set in motion many months ago than literally begin to bear fruit, this is one of the most pleasurable things about gardening for me and it really gives you that sense of reward and achievement.
Visual Results
When I began gardening my back yard was clean and tidy, but it certainly didn’t look very good. As time has gone on and I have added bits and pieces to the garden, changing its appearance, the garden has become something really beautiful which the whole family enjoys. We like to invite people to the house when the sun is shining and they all comment on the garden. This is also something which you’ll find very rewarding and every time that I look out across my garden, I feel proud at what I have done.
Value
Something which I had never really considered before was the value that I was adding on to the property as a result of my gardening exploits. I was speaking to a neighbor who is a financial lender last week who commented on the additional value that the home would now have. This of course isn’t a sole reason as to why you should start gardening, but it is a benefit which we can all enjoy. I would even go as far to say that the money which I have spent on the garden, will be recouped with the additional value which I have added to the property.
