Advice For What To Do If You Are Arrested

Blog

10 Jul

Being accused of any crime will always be a traumatic experience. This is not something that anyone expects to happen to them in their lifetime, yet it is surprisingly common. It is important that you know how to act when you have been accused of a crime as this can help you to stay calm and avoid saying/doing anything which could come back to haunt you. Being able to stay calm and keep your wits about you will be incredibly helpful and should help you to clear your name and get back to your normal life sooner rather than later. Here are a few tips.

  • Remain Quiet

First, it is important that you exercise your right to remain silent. If you are innocent, you will be desperate to avoid being arrested but there is nothing that you can say which will stop it from occurring and you could accidentally contradict yourself in a state of panic.

  • Contact A Solicitor

You then need to contact an experienced solicitor as soon as possible. They will be able to provide you with advice and support and work on your behalf to clear your name. Only speak to the authorities when your lawyer is present and listen carefully to what they have to say.

  • Find A Bail Bondsman

If you have been arrested and put in jail, it can be a traumatic and very scary experience. You will want to get out as soon as possible, which means that you need to post bail. This can be an expensive process so you may want to find a bail bondsman. You can find these by searching in your area – bail bondsman near me, for example. You must then make sure that you attend all criminal hearings after posting bail.

  • Gather Evidence

It is then a case of building your case which your lawyer will be able to do for you. You can help by gathering evidence to clear your name, which could include contacting witnesses or people who can confirm your innocence, receipts, videos, clothing, etc.

  • Avoid Contact With Accuser

It can be tempting to contact the person that has accused you of a crime to try and reason with them, but this is a big mistake. This could easily lead to a conflict which would not reflect well on your part and could even lead to accusations of harassment or intimidation.

  • Try To Remain Calm

It is an awful experience being accused of a crime and it is sure to affect you in a few different ways. Although difficult, it is important to try to remain calm and put your faith in your lawyer and the justice system. Try to keep the same routine as usual, find ways to de-stress and enjoy spending time with friends and family.

Being accused of a crime can be a terrible experience and one which can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety. These tips should help you to stay calm while also making sure that you are able to clear your name and resume normal life sooner rather than later.
