How To Help Your Loved One Improve Their Health

Blog· Healthy

4 Sep

If your loved one has adopted bad habits that are impacting their general health and happiness, it’s only natural you would want to help them get back on the right track. For example, they could be eating too much, working out too hard, struggling with stress, or living with an addiction.

While it might seem impossible to help them, you’ll be happy to learn there are ways you can support your relative or friend during their time of need. Read the below tips on how to help your loved one improve their health.

Don’t Nag or Judge Your Loved One

While you might believe you know what’s best for your friend or family member, nagging or judging your loved one might simply create distance between you both. It’s important to provide them with love, support, and understanding, so they will know they can turn to you at any point for assistance.

Lead by Example

If you want to point your loved one in the right direction, you should lead by example when it comes to a healthy lifestyle. For example, if your loved one is struggling to lose weight, adopt a healthier diet and encourage them to follow in your footsteps. If you eat junk food, they might be tempted to join you.

Talk to them about your own personal struggles with your weight and how you’re overcoming them, which could help them kick their food addiction for good.

Recommend Professional Support

If your loved one is struggling with a health issue, they might benefit from professional support. For instance, if your spouse, friend, or relative is battling a drug addiction, they can identify the cause of their substance abuse with effective trauma therapy Los Angeles. As a result, they’ll understand how to manage their triggers and cravings effectively.

Encourage Smaller Steps

A loved one might feel overwhelmed when attempting to change their lifestyle. To help them onto the right path, encourage them to take smaller steps each day. For example, if they live an inactive lifestyle, they could walk twenty minutes every other day for the first week, and thirty minutes each day the second week, etc.

You could also encourage them to gradually increase their pace or walk on different terrains to get their legs moving and heart pumping. Breaking down their goals into smaller chunks will seem more achievable, which could increase their motivation towards completing a larger goal.

Help Them to Develop a Positive State of Mind

It is easy for people to tell themselves “I can’t do it,” which can lead them to giving up on their goals and embracing their bad habits. Your mission should be to help a friend or relative to maintain a positive state of mind.

For example, a kind, encouraging word could boost their self-belief and passion to succeed. You should also congratulate your loved one for working hard or completing a small or large goal. Your encouragement alone could be enough to help them stay on track during their toughest challenges.
