Men’s formal wear commonly consists of a suit jacket, a shirt and a pair of trousers. Sometimes a waistcoat is added underneath the suit jacket. When wearing a suit, it is important to remember that the fit is the most important aspect to consider. A bespoke tailor can make custom-fit suits that will look great on the wearer. But there are other accessories that can be worn together with the staple suit pieces.
Necktie or Bowtie
A necktie or a bowtie is reserved when dressing for a formal setting or business settings. A suit is almost bare without a necktie. For formal events, a suit without one of these accessories is deemed inappropriate. A bowtie is considered more formal than a necktie, as a necktie can be worn every day to work.
Watch
A black leather strapped watch or stainless-steel watch makes a formal look more elegant and polished. Sports watches with plastic or fabric straps are a big no-no. Wearing one will completely ruin the look. It is a wise move to invest in a formal or dress watch for such occasions. They can also be worn together with everyday looks.
Belt
Just like a necktie, a suit ensemble looks incomplete without a leather belt. You can choose to make a statement with your outfit with a contrasting belt, such as brown leather with a black or dark coloured suit.
Cuff Links
Cufflinks, it must be noted, cannot be worn with just about any type of shirt. They only go with shirts with French cuffs. They may be small and unnoticeable, but cufflinks now come in different designs, which can add a personal touch to the look. The designs come in a wide range, from classic designs to novelty ones.
Pocket Squares
Pocket squares allow the wearer to personalise the look. They reflect the personality of the man. Pocket squares can be colourful or subdued, depending on the occasion and the mood. Neckties and pocket squares usually come in sets. But matching ties and pocket squares are not required, as long as separate ties and squares do not clash.
Tie Clips
Tie clips are both fashionable and functional. They come in a variety of designs: some come in plain bars but some come with designs on them. Aside from adding a dapper accessory to the whole ensemble, tie clips perform their function quite well. They hold the necktie in place and prevent them from flying and getting creases throughout the day.
A complete suit ensemble can do without some or all of these accessories. It is up to the wearer to change up the look a bit by adding an accent to his overall look. When wearing accessories with a suit, it is worth noting that it should never be overdone, otherwise the whole outfit – no matter how perfectly fitting and elegant – will lose its total appeal.
