Moving Your Business to the Cloud? Here are Things to Consider

Business

22 Sep

When talking about business technology, it is impossible not to mention cloud computing. As early as 2014, around 90% of businesses had adopted some form of cloud business intelligence. Nevertheless, some companies still hesitate to migrate.

If your company is already on the cusp of migrating to a cloud-based solution like Azure cloud service, there are considerations before making the move.

Define how your company plans to use cloud computing

Cloud computing offers a variety of deployment options. The company needs to decide which processes will be migrated to cloud business intelligence. Typically, companies migrate to the cloud because of the following uses:

  • Email hosting. Most companies are already using third-party email hosting services. Relocating to the cloud eliminates maintenance and hardware concerns. Aside from this, if your company wants more efficient email archiving solutions, you can do this via a cloud-based service like office 365 email archiving.
  • Software applications. Another common purpose of migrating to the cloud is to take advantage of software tools deployed to the cloud. That helps with efficient access for all stakeholders involved. For example, if the software is cloud-based, an employee can access it anywhere as long as there is an internet connection.
  • Scaling company resources. As your company grows, chances are you’ll need bigger storage for company data. If you don’t adopt cloud computing, the company ends up paying more to acquire new hardware to extend storage capacity.

Depending on the current needs of your organization, you can migrate to the cloud one step at a time. However, it is essential to first lay down the objectives of the company in adopting cloud business intelligence.

Have a complete understanding of how cloud computing benefits your company

Knowing and understanding the benefits of cloud computing helps the company justify the migration as well as the costs associated with it. If you take into consideration the many benefits of using cloud search, there is no doubt that it is an excellent move for any business.

Plan for the transition and learning process

Moving to the cloud and adopting new procedures will involve some learning and unlearning. You need to set a realistic time frame so that each stakeholder involved in the migration will have ample training and familiarization with the processes. You need to explain in detail every new procedure and feature so that each employee can take full advantage of them.

Give importance to security

Moving to the cloud entails safeguarding sensitive information. The company may also need to establish new rules on security upon transitioning to the cloud. As such, it is essential to ask the provider about the level of protection they provide especially if your company deals with sensitive client information.

Who’s in charge of cloud service management?

If a majority of the company’s IT infrastructure is being migrated to the cloud, you’ll need to have a dedicated IT team who will manage the transition and provide ongoing support to ensure smooth operation as your company continues to leverage the new technology.

There is no doubt that moving to the cloud is an inevitable consequence of technology. Nevertheless, every business considering such a transition must calculate carefully how to leverage the features to their full advantage.
