The Top Skills Needed to be a Sales Development Representative

Business

22 Oct

If you’ve been looking to pursue a career in sales, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, you’ll be able to learn the skills needed to become a highly successful sales development representative. These skills can help you stand out from other potential candidates when you look for a sales job in San Francisco. But before anything else, what does a sales development representative actually do? On a day to day basis, they contact potential business leads and provide them with an initial point of contact before funneling them on to a sales rep. If you’re interested in acquiring the skills needed in this field to become one of San Francisco’s highest-paid sales development representatives simply continue reading to discover what you’ll need to work on.

Problem-solving skills:

As a sales development representative, it’s important to have critical problem-solving skills as you’ll have to solve complex problems on a day to day basis. For example, if a potential client doesn’t fit into a specific category, you’ll have to use your problem-solving skills in order to select the right sales team to communicate with them.

Research skills:

You’ll spend most of your time at work looking for new leads and trying to funnel each lead that you identify to the right team. Remember that as a sales development representative your job is not to fulfill a quota of sales but to identify sales target and to funnel them to the right part of your business. As you become more experienced as a sales development representative you’ll be able to figure out which opportunities are well worth spending your time on and following up on and which sales opportunities are unlikely to offer a substantial benefit to your business.

Analytical skills:

You’ll also find that analytical skills come in handy in your role as it will be your job to qualify potential clients and to ascertain whether or not each client will be valuable to your business. Since not all business is good business and some clients can end up costing companies far more than they bring in, it’s crucial to be able to accurately assess how valuable each potential sales deal would be to your company and to target specific clients who would provide lucrative sales for your business.

Communication skills:

It’s also a smart idea to brush up on your communication skills as in many cases you may act as an intermediary between your business’ leads, potential clients and your business’ sales team. Not only is it important to have strong verbal communication skills as you’ll spend a fair chunk of each day making phone calls, but it’s also essential to have strong written communication skills to answer client’s queries by email. As a sales development representative, you’ll need to know how to concisely and clearly answer any questions that potential clients may have.

Time management skills:

While time management skills are useful in any industry or role, as a sales development representative you’ll be tasked with establishing contact with as many potential leads for your business as possible. Which means that you’ll need to manage your time carefully, in order to contact a sizeable number of potential leads in a day. As it may not be worth spending several hours talking to a potential client who may not be able to offer your business a large enough contact.

If you’re willing to invest your time into this career in order to work your way up to your career ladder, it’s definitely well worth getting started by trying to acquire all of the essential skills which are listed above.
