Maintenance Tips for Your Gate to Last Longer

Choosing the ideal iron gate for your property can be quite overwhelming because of the full range of designs that are available in the market. One of the reasons why many homeowners prefer to have iron gates installed on their property is to make it look attractive. Also, gates serve their purpose of providing extra security. To ensure that it remains beautiful and in good condition, it is essential that we give our gates the proper care and attention that they deserve. Here are some helpful tips on how to properly care for your gates.

Preventive maintenance is necessary

Just like any object inside your home, it is essential that you provide the right aftercare to make your gates last longer. One of the downsides of having iron gates is that they are prone to rusting due to changes in weather. Rust can eat at the gates and cause them to become brittle or weaker over time. As a preventive measure, it is best to apply a thin layer of wax so your gates will be free from rust build-up.

Clean them regularly

Many people tend to ignore their gates overtime, but if you want your visitors to have a good impression of your home, then your gates should remain presentable at all times. Keep them well maintained by cleaning them with mild soap and a sponge. Dust dirt and grime can pile up on your gates, which makes your property look less appealing.

Check for visible damage and have it repaired

If you notice even just a small sign of damage on your gates, it is best to have them repaired before it gets worse. Do not wait until the hole or damage becomes more prominent before calling for a maintenance specialist or welder.

Paint your gates to prevent rust build-up

Rust can easily corrode any metal or iron surface which can cause irreversible damage in the long run. If your property is near the beach, then you need to repaint your gates every three months, but you need to remove any rust build up using a steel brush before painting. If you see small chips of paint starting to fall off, it is advisable to do some retouching to prevent the rust from spreading

Keep your gates free from pests

If you have an automatic or a remote-controlled gate, you need to pay more attention to its maintenance. There is a tendency that small insects, bird feathers and ant hills can get stuck in your gates and significantly damage the electronic motors and wiring that control the activity of your gates. Make sure to lubricate the sides and the locks as often as you can to prevent them from getting damaged.

Replacing your iron gates can be quite expensive, especially if they are quite tall and heavy. That is why it is essential to become a responsible homeowner by making sure that your gates remain in excellent condition all year round.
