You’ve seen it in the magazines; those clever little tricks and hacks used to add a dash of flair and décor excellence to your home. Well, maybe it is time to stop saying how great they look and to get serious about tackling some yourself. Here is a list of great DIY ideas to make your home an even better place to live:
Wall Art
Isn’t it simplyawful when you see some artwork on a wall that you just know the person bought at a mass-production outlet? Or worse, when something like that is on your own wall!
Create your own, unique, wall art by taking your own arty photograph of something, and then having it professionally enlarged. Then take some old garage-sale portrait frame to frame it and, voila!
Alternatively, take a whole bunch of photographs and use an old wooden window frame to place them in for that authentic weathered look.
Paint unusual things
No, this does not mean you should paint your cat; but how about painting the sides of your doors?
This might seem a little quirky and “out there” but it actually adds a wonderful splash of color and character to a room. While the door might be white on both sides, a vibrant green on the side-strip will lend a unique look to every room. It stays hidden while the door is closed but as soon as someone opens the door they get a pleasant color surprise.
Why stop there? Paint the sides of the drawers of your of your dresser too!
Old Vinyl
Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan may be revived as decor. Their albums are on your iPod anyway, so take those old scratched records from the sixties and turn them into DIY projects.
There are literally hundreds of things to do with old vinyl records. Paint them and turn them into wall clocks, heat them up and mold them into utensil holders or simply use your old seven inch singles as coasters!
Let your imagination run wild as you come up with new ideas for old vinyl.
Books
Don’t throw out all those books you will never read again. Use them to create stunning, unique décor.
Color-coordinate your books and arrange them in aesthetically pleasing ways around the house, or cut a slot into some books’ pages and hide keys, money,or other valuables in there.
Use the hard cover of an old book to hide your router and use the pages to make greeting cards or wallpaper.
Why not drill a hole right through a stack of old books and run an electric cable through it to make an attractive lamp stand?
Mirrors
This might surprise you but we often forget just what a wonderful DIY trick this is.
Mirrors add a lot of depth to a room and there is so much that one can do with them. Not only do they add more light to a room (always a good thing) but adding a mirror, or two, to your lounge, for example, will instantly make the place look more sophisticated and rounded off.
Also, add some character to your bathroom mirrors by painting them in the corners with some funky watercolors.
Get your creative juices flowing and see just how far some artistically-inspired thinking will take you. Who says beautifying your home should be an expensive exercise?
