Five Maintenance Problems You Shouldn’t Ignore

Lifestyle

26 Feb

Keeping your home running like a well-oiled machine is no easy task. Everyone expects a certain amount of wear and tear. While it can be tempting to ignore the problem and make the dangerous promise to yourself that you will fix it later (especially if the repairs are going to be costly), some issues need attending to immediately if you want to avoid an even worse, and more expensive, problem.

Here are five maintenance problems you shouldn’t ignore.

1. Clogged or leaky gutters

The gutters on your home serve an important purpose: they remove the water away from the foundation of your home. Runoff water that pools around your foundation can cause serious structural problems if not addressed in a timely manner. It’s best to regularly clear out your gutters, remove clogs from drain pipes running down the side of your home, and ensure your gutters aren’t leaking water anywhere.

2. Foundation cracks

Speaking of foundation issues, if you notice any cracks running up the wall, or buckling or gaps near your foundation, you most likely have a major foundation issue at hand. It’s quite expensive to fix, but it’s even more expensive if your home collapses because it’s become structurally unsound. It’s a good idea to do a once-over of your foundation every few months to double-check everything is in tip-top condition.

3. Leaky pipes

Dripping faucets may be annoying, but that isn’t all they are. They can be a symptom of a much bigger problem: leaky pipes. Water leaking from your pipes can cause mildew and mold, which can lead to health issues for you and your family if ignored.

It’s easy to clean up the small outbreaks of mold, but you should address the source of the problem by hiring a plumber to come in and fix the pipes as soon as feasibly possible. If left unchecked, water could seep into the floors, walls and ceiling, causing them to deteriorate over time. Fix It Fast are professional plumbers in Simi Valley and they can take care of your plumbing problems before they get out of hand and become incredibly costly.

4. Drafty windows and doors

While this is an issue that won’t cause physical damage to your home or property if ignored, it will cost you money. If you feel a breeze coming from your doors and windows, you’re also feeling your money being wasted. Your energy bills increase when the outside air comes into your home. If you have the heat or air conditioning on, you’re wasting electricity too, which is not only costly but also bad for the environment. This is an easy fix you can do yourself with a tube of caulk, and it will save you money each month on your energy bills.

5. Flickering and dimming lights

If your lights are flickering or dimming when you turn on appliances, then be sure to call an electrician right away. It’s easy to chalk this problem up as something out of your control, but in reality, it could mean your home’s wiring is faulty or loose.

This is a warning sign that your home is at risk of starting an electrical fire and needs major electrical work done to repair it.
