Acrobats are very valuable when it comes to entertaining audiences with their feats of agility, coordination, and balance. They perform in groups or individually. Usually, acrobatics is all about body-related skills but there are circus acrobats that use props, like the flying trapeze or aerial fabrics. There are even circus acrobats that will use wheels or balls.

The acrobat needs to display very high strength, grace, and flexibility. Routines are often choreographed to display artistry and particular skills.

Obviously, the work of the circus acrobat involves traveling and danger. This is especially the case when performing aerial routines. Some protective gear would be required.

In many cases, the skills needed for acrobatics are initiated through some youth activities, like gymnastics, tumbling, or dance. Advanced skills are usually learned with attendance at circus school training facilities.

Countless physical training programs exist that would be able to aid you to learn the necessary performance and acrobatic skills when your goal is to be an acrobat in a circus. The three most common examples are dancing, cheerleading, and gymnastics programs. You can also join circus acrobatics schools that can start a child as young as the age of 5. Youth circuses also accept students with children aged between 10 and 18.

  • Postsecondary Training

Attending formal circus schools is a very good idea when you are an aspiring acrobat. Such a school usually gives access to training to people of all ages. Also, there are college campus circus clubs that can be considered. If you want to be involved in something really intensive, earning bachelor’s degrees in related athletics or movement fields like physical theater is a route to consider.

As you get the training you need, you can work on your resume and even record a video that you would use as a demo. The resume of the acrobat can include training skills, skill levels, stage experience, and special acts performed. It should also include photos of your body lines and face. Online options are also available when you build your resume.

  • Continue Working On Your Skills

Usually, the acrobat starts their career with a smaller part at a smaller circus. This is important to gain experience and build skills before the audition for a larger act. You can also work to develop very advanced skills and work with more partners. For instance, you can work on developing more skills with wheel gymnastics, the Chinese pole, or the rolling globe.

To sum up, the most important thing for the circus acrobat is experience in front of audiences and attending a good circus school. In order to work at a circus, you need technical skills, flexibility, balance, and strength.
