How to Calm Your Hyperactive Dog

Lifestyle

25 Mar

When you have a dog that seems to have a never-ending supply of energy, you might find yourself at your wit’s end when it comes to figuring out how to calm him down. Furthermore, some dogs will turn to more destructive behaviors if they don’t adequately expend their energy.

Of course, if your dog is still a puppy, this is easily explained and isn’t something that will last forever. It is also a well-known fact that certain dog breeds need much more exercise than others in order to be able to relax during the day and night. However, if your dog is an adult and isn’t of a high-energy breed, you might need to consider adopting some new tactics in order to calm him down.

Encourage the Right Behaviors

It can be tempting to allow your dog to go crazy when they get excited. Maybe they are used to going wild whenever you come home from being out and about. While this can be fun every once in a while, the problem you run into when you encourage such behavior is that your dog will think that losing control is the appropriate way to react every time you enter the house. It is better to discourage such a reaction and instead help your dog to understand that they need to be calm when you come home.

It is not enough to discourage your dog from getting overexcited at certain times. You should also look to reinforce positive, calm behavior whenever they exhibit overexcitement. When your dog is relaxed, you might not think that there is much of a point in acknowledging it. However, by rewarding your pup for being calm, you are telling him that this is the behavior you expect and want from him on a regular basis.

Try Calming Treats

Some dogs might need a little extra help to calm down than the more commonly used tactics. It might be worthwhile to try giving your pup some calming treats that have CBD in them. CBD is a safe and effective way to help relax your hyperactive dog; CBD treats, such as those available at CeeBeeDoo, come in many flavors that your dog is sure to love. Such treats can also help manage other common issues like anxiety or arthritis.

Exercise Your Dog Regularly

The age and breed of your dog are two factors that contribute to their energy level. That being said, some dogs, regardless of breed or age, are just naturally hyperactive. If this describes your dog, one of the best things you can do is to make sure that he is getting enough daily exercise.

Playing, going on long walks, and even going on a run each day can help burn up your dog’s excess energy so that his behavior is more manageable. Not only will this help your dog’s behavior, but it will help improve his physical wellbeing too. You also get the added benefit of doing more exercise yourself.
