Moving to a new place can definitely be an exciting time, whether it’s a new country altogether, another town or city, or even if it’s just across town from where you already live, there are places that even if you’ve spent a lot of time nearby you might not be overly familiar with simply because you’ve never had to be.
So, if you’re planning to move somewhere, then it’s a good idea to try and get to know the area a little before moving.
Of course, part of the excitement of moving somewhere else is that you get to be an explorer for a while and check things out on your own, but on a practical level for things like work and daily needs, it’s good to have an idea of where things are before you move there.
So, here are a few things you might want to consider looking into before moving to a new area.
Healthcare
No matter where you go in the world it’s always good to have things like a doctor and dentist within reach, so for example, you could have a look online for a dentist in Croydon before moving to see which options are available within a mile of where you live, and do the same with doctors for whichever area you’re going to be living in.
Some won’t allow you to register with them as a patient until you’ve already moved, but it’s definitely a good idea to know which options you have available before moving, especially if they’re services you use on a regular basis.
School/work connections
Living a new area can be something you do for various reasons, and no matter what your reasons are, you’re still going to need to be able to get yourself to work on a daily basis or even if you have children, have good schools nearby that can be accessed without a massive commute each day, so this is always something you should think about researching before you move to get familiar with.
Facilities
The kinds of facilities you look for in your new area will really depend on the lifestyle you have and what you value. For example, you may be looking for quality shopping facilities, good parks, or you may want good nightlife, supermarkets or restaurants nearby or even sport facilities or beaches.
It’s definitely helpful to have a good idea of what kinds of things exist nearby that both you and your family could enjoy.
Social opportunities
If you’re moving somewhere quite far away where you don’t know anyone, then you may be looking for ways to make friends, and as an adult this can often seem like a bit of a challenge, so it’s a good idea to look into whether there are things like meetup groups happening, classes where you could meet people or even an existing expat community where you could meet people.
Safety
Safety should always be a top priority no matter where you go, especially if it’s somewhere you’re planning to live, so having a look at things like overall crime rates and what people are saying and what’s being reported in that area are all good ways to understand if there are any particular safety concerns there before you do take that leap.
