I first met Jared Seyl on a course about financial advising, he was looking to change his career after almost 2 decades working in farmers insurance, and I was looking to add another string to my bow. During the course we did some outreach work and that was when Jared began to tell me about the volunteer work which he did each weekend. At that time I didn’t do any volunteer work and I felt very ashamed about this when speaking with Jared. And so, having been inspired, I have been spending most Saturdays in the last 3 years working with mentally handicapped children. The volunteer work has changed my life and I wanted to try to pass on that inspiration and tell you why you should try and do some non-profit work if you are able to.
Feels Good
I say without any shame whatsoever that helping other people when you don’t necessarily have to feels very good indeed and it leaves you with a sense of pride. The reason why I don’t feel ashamed in saying that I enjoy this sometimes for selfish reasons, is that I am doing good at the same time, my own personal feelings are nothing more than a nice bonus. There aren’t too many win-win situations in this life but when it comes to helping others, that is exactly what you will find.
Paying Forward
Life has all manner of twists and turns and whilst everything might be fine in your life right now, we are only ever a disaster or two away from needing someone to help us out. I like to think then that there is a certain amount of paying forward here and that the more good which you can put out into the world, the more good that will be done. Think about if your Mum, brother or Grandpa needed some help, wouldn’t you love the idea of someone giving up their time for them?
Necessary
I won’t get political or philosophical on you but the truth of the matter is that despite the fact that our country has more than enough to house, feed and give everyone jobs, this is just not the way that it works and many communities and organizations rely on volunteers to do the good work that they do. In fact without volunteers there are many programs and businesses which would have to close, and that would be a very sad situation because of the great work that they can do for people, pets and animals and the environment. If you care about humankind at all then giving up a little bit of your time to help people out is a great way to show it.
You can volunteer within any area that you care about, as long as you invest some of your time, or even some of your money, you can do a lot of good in the world.
