If you’ve always dreamed of running with the bulls in Pamplona, base jumping off a tower or deep-sea diving in shark infested waters, you’re the kind of person who only feels most alive when they have massive amounts of adrenaline flowing through their body.
Studies have shown that the resulting rush quickly becomes addictive, causing the individual to seek out ever more extreme experiences, but thankfully, there many other, hugely accessible, sporting activities that will satisfy all your urges.
Free running
How do you fancy getting your kicks by jumping across rooftops, somersaulting over low walls, leaping from one obstacle to another in the midst of a crowded park or backflipping your way down a set of stairs? If any or all of this sounds appealing, then you’re the perfect candidate to take up the sport of parkour, also known as free running. As well as being guaranteed a major adrenaline rush each time you take part, you also get to learn moves with cool names such as the tick-tack, the gap jump, and the kong vault.
At its most basic, the sport involves getting from A to B using the surrounding environment and obstacles to complete the journey in the most efficient way. The best practitioners take this one step further, expressing their personality through their moves by adding additional flourishes to everything they do.
Stunt scootering
In the past few years, the sport of stunt scootering, also called freestyle scootering, has become increasingly mainstream. While traditional scooters are designed to do little more than get you from A to B, stunt scooters are designed to be used on the street or in skate parks and are robust enough to be used in a variety of stunts. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, this sport is a dream come true.
Getting the right equipment that is a good match for your size and skills is essential if you want to be able to get involved in the sport yourself, so don’t rush into making a decision before you know what suits you best. In a hugely competitive field, AO scooters are a widely respected scooter brand, which manages to stand out from the pack because of their commitment to supporting their riders within the sport. Perfectly suited to intermediate and pro riders, and optimized for grind tricks and general street skating, these are some of the most durable and stylish scooters around. Street Luge
If you feel the need for extreme speed, street luge is the sport from you. It involves lying flat on your back and hurtling down a hill on what is essentially an oversized skateboard, at speeds of up to 80mph, steering by shifting your weight from side to side.
It’s dangerous enough to demand a high level of personal protection for all those taking part – you use your feet as brakes so solid shoes with thick soles are essential – but the thrills you experience as a result are hard to beat. It could well be the most exciting sport you have never tried.
