Worried About The Party Season? How Your Recovery Can Help You Stay Strong

Lifestyle

1 Oct

Just because you are in the process of recovering from an addiction does not mean that you should miss out on social events with loved ones. Whilst you may be worried about attending a party and remaining sober, this is an important part of the recovery process. But, if you do feel you are ready then here are some helpful points to keep you strong as the night comes in and the party begins.

Preparation beforehand

You may be worried about what may happen if you turn up at a party and want to stay sober for the full night. Anxiety is a symptom of the withdrawal, that around 18.1% adults in the U.S. suffer from, and may only get worse if you continue to indulge in those thoughts. Instead of thinking “Oh, I am going to be no fun” or “everyone is going to be drunk,” firstly remember that the people at the party are your friends. They will not judge you for avoiding things.

Instead, think of other things that you could be doing to prepared yourself for the night. If you are worried about the drinks then why not bring your own? Try soft drinks. Nowadays, Mocktails are easier than ever to create and taste delicious. Not only are they a great conversation starter, but you will have your friends begging for the recipe.

Check in with those you trust

If you are worried about anything, then you don’t have to keep it locked away inside your mind. Most rehabs, such as this lauded drug and alcohol rehab in Surrey facility have numbers which you can call in order to talk to a therapist. If you don’t want to talk to them, then feel free to speak to your friends and loved ones about it. Talk to them about your plans, how you are going to remain sober and take in any advice they may give you. Remember, you should not keep yourself isolated from the world.

Go with a supportive friend

You may be scared that you might fall to peer-pressure if you were to go to a party alone. However, if you ask a friend to go with you, then they can keep an eye on you for the night. A craving only lasts for about 20 minutes, so if you are starting to feel the urge then your friend can keep you strong during this phase. Having a friend can also make it easier to integrate into conversation and to relax, which is what you need to have fun and chill out once you get there.

Know how to leave

If you feel you are reaching your limits, then don’t be ashamed of leaving an event. Whether it is due to emotion, tiredness or feeling like it is too much too soon, then prepare yourself with a reason for leaving. There is no shame in knowing when you are ready to return home, in fact it shows that you are strong enough to make that decision.
