What Can We Learn from Those Wo Put Idea Management Above Education?

Successful

31 Jan

Nowadays, it seems impossible to get a job without an education. That is, unless you create a job yourself. That is precisely what entrepreneurs have always done, prioritizing their own ideas and creating the life they want for themselves. There are thousands of stories of brilliant individuals who never even finished high school and now earn billions. And it seems that what sets them apart from the regular people is that they believe idea management is more important than anything else. So what are some of the fields they have developed?

Idea Management in Computer Science

Computer science is all about idea management and innovative thinking. Sure, Michael Dell, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates all went to college, but it was at college that they were stimulated to take risks and to experiment, and this is what grew the field. Had they not done this, there would not have been a Dell, an Apple, or a Microsoft. Computer science still understand this. The degree is not exact, but rather fluid, teaching students to be adaptable and agile, learning languages, and working on innovative entrepreneurships.

The Degree Doesn’t Matter

There are fields, like medicine, where the degree is absolutely vital. However, within the world of tech, this isn’t the case. A piece of paper is useful, but abilities, personality, skills, and knowledge is far more important. Google, for instance, cares very little about college experience because they found no correlation between a college degree and job performance. Hence, around 14% of the employees in the different Google teams never went to college. Tesla Motors’ Elon Musk has the same thoughts, caring about what people can do and what they know, not about what they learned at school.

Should You Go to College?

The above makes it sound as if people shouldn’t bother going to college anymore at all. That isn’t the case, however. The reality is that the ability to go to college and to complete it in particular also shows certain skills and abilities. While it may not prove that you are good at your job, it does prove a level of independent and academic thinking. Meanwhile, those with a college degree are 71% more likely to be in work. Those without also earn an average of 32% less. So a college degree does matter, it simply isn’t all that matters.

Lifelong Learning Matters Most

Did you know that the first personal computer was released by IBM just 36 years ago? And today, little children walk around with smartphones that can do more? 10 years ago, programming languages were cutting edge; today, they are almost irrelevant. No, you don’t need a degree to become good, but you do need to learn to keep up with developments. This is why it is so good to see that some 199,815 individuals took part in “unofficial” online courses in 2013-14. They are committed to making sure they remain up to date with the world of today.
