Who doesn’t love a great graphic tee? They pair so well and so naturally with jeans and Chucks, and you can style them so many different ways–knotted, half-tucked, layered over or under flannels and sweaters, the list goes on. Honestly there probably isn’t a more versatile top out there than the graphic tee. Not only are they great for casual looks, they can also be appropriate on the job or even out at night. In this post, we’ll talk about ways to dress them up and, you guessed it, dress them down.
Work it
If you have a job that involves casual Fridays, or casual any days, or maybe an internship at a business where t shirts are appropriate, consider adding some zest to your style with a graphic tee that has a subtle design or pretty pop of color. Perhaps you volunteer someplace where people can use extra cheer like an assisted living facility, homeless shelter, or children’s hospital–those are perfect places to spread joy through personal style. Whether you add some fun earrings or keep it simple with tiny studs, accessorizing a graphic tee is easy and doesn’t involve much effort.
If your job, internship, or volunteer situation is a bit more professional, consider wearing your graphic tee tucked into a pencil or a-line skirt with a pair of heels and pearl studs. Add an open cardi or more formal button-down sweater to complete the look. This is also a good time to throw on your geekiest glasses (prescription or not) to really drive home the conservative emphasis.
Layer up
Leopard cardigans are THE layering piece this year, and guess what they work super well with? That’s right, a graphic tee. Whether it’s an open, long cardi or it’s a more demure buttoned-up sister, the leo sweater will level up your outfit into fashionista status.
A chambray or flannel shirt worn over, tied at the waist, or left unbuttoned is an essential part of layering, especially with a graphic tee. Alternatively, we like the look of a buttoned-up flannel with a graphic tee layered over it–button your flannel all the way up, roll up the sleeves, and pair with a pair of jeans and simple flats. A messy bun or other casual hairstyle keep it fun and fresh.
We are currently obsessed with these Christian t shirts that come in tons of gorgeous colors and styles. They are not overly religious, but a perfect way to low key flaunt your faith.
Sure, we love to layer cardis, flannels, chambrays, and jean jackets, but over what? How about a skirt, tights, and Sorel or Hunter boots? You can go basic by adding a Starbucks, or ditch the weather boots and go for a mid-calf biker boot or grunge it up 90’s style with a pair of black Doc Martens. Other options, depending on your mood that day or what you typically stick to wardrobe-wise, include mom jeans or jorts, and of course everyone’s favorite old standby, leggings. These all look great with a flannel tied around the waist and a simple choker as an accessory.
Add sparkle
We’re also loving rock ‘n’ roll tees like The Rolling Stones, and retro styles featuring our favorite oughts stars like Britney Spears. There’s just something about showing off your ironic musical taste that adds so much style and wit to your aesthetic. Let’s say you want to dress up your very hip graphic musical tee…add some sparkle and turn up in a sequined blazer and leggings.
For an amazing 70s vibe try flared jeans, a metallic platform heel, and a sparkly bomber jacket. Don’t forget appropriate hair accessories like shiny hair pins or oversize clips to hold your side part or sleek chignon in place.
Sequin bottoms are always in during the holiday season; grab a pair of leggings or a pencil skirt to wear with your graphic tee. Or try layering one under a satin slip dress with an ankle bootie. Add a glittery clutch, statement earrings, and a leather moto jacket and you’re set to party all night. If you’re especially into the holidays and want a Christmas theme for your dressy look, consider Christian t shirts with an appropriate seasonal message. The key to this look is to keep things simple, with no more than 3-4 pieces making up your ensemble. More is more. Concise is effortless and chic.
Get graphic
Whether you have a minimal, capsule wardrobe, or tons of clothes, a great graphic tee should be a staple in your closet. Such a casual and ubiquitous piece is actually so much more when you let your creative side take over when styling it. Take it to work, layer it up for those transitional seasons, or glam it up by adding sparkle. Any way you cut it, the graphic tee is total greatness.
